Shopify Store Audit Checklist for Agencies

Published March 2026 · 7 min read

When you onboard a new Shopify client, you need a clear baseline. What's working, what's broken, and what needs attention first. Without a structured audit, you're guessing. And guessing leads to missed issues, scope creep, and clients who wonder what they're paying for.

This checklist covers every area your agency should review before starting any optimization work.

Why Agencies Need a Standard Audit Process

A standard audit process solves three problems at once.

Consistency. Every team member checks the same things in the same order. No one skips a category because they forgot or ran out of time.

Documentation. A completed checklist becomes a deliverable. It shows the client exactly what you found and gives you a reference point for measuring improvement later.

Speed. When you know what to look for, you move faster. A structured checklist turns a two-day review into a two-hour process.

The Shopify Store Audit Checklist

Work through each section below. For every item, note whether it passes, fails, or needs improvement.

Product Images

Priority: High

  • Every product has at least one image
  • Products have three or more images where possible
  • Images are high resolution and properly lit
  • Image dimensions are consistent across products
  • Alt text is set on all product images
  • Variant-specific images are assigned correctly
  • No placeholder or stock images used as primary product photos

Product Descriptions

Priority: High

  • Every product has a description (no blank fields)
  • Descriptions are at least 100 words
  • Copy is original, not duplicated from the manufacturer
  • Descriptions include benefits, not just specs
  • Formatting uses paragraphs, bullet points, or headings for readability
  • No spelling or grammar errors

SEO

Priority: High

  • Every product has a unique meta title (under 60 characters)
  • Every product has a meta description (under 160 characters)
  • Collection pages have custom meta titles and descriptions
  • No duplicate meta titles across the store
  • URL handles are clean and descriptive (no random strings)
  • H1 tags are present and unique on key pages
  • Image alt text includes relevant keywords naturally

Pricing and Product Data

Priority: Medium

  • All products have prices set
  • Compare-at prices are used correctly (not misleadingly)
  • Product types are assigned consistently
  • Vendors are filled in where applicable
  • Tags follow a consistent naming convention
  • SKUs are assigned to all products and variants
  • Inventory tracking is enabled where appropriate

Broken Links

Priority: High

  • No 404 errors in navigation menus
  • No broken links in footer
  • No broken internal links in product descriptions or blog posts
  • Deleted products have 301 redirects in place
  • External links still resolve correctly
  • Collection links in menus match current collection URLs

Store Structure

Priority: Medium

  • Navigation has seven or fewer top-level items
  • Every product belongs to at least one collection
  • No collections with fewer than three products
  • Collection hierarchy is logical and easy to browse
  • Key pages (About, Contact, FAQ, Shipping) are accessible from the footer
  • Homepage features clear paths to top collections or products

How to Prioritize Your Findings

Not every issue needs to be fixed immediately. Use a tier system to guide your recommendations.

Tier 1: Fix immediately. Broken links, missing product images, and pages with no meta titles. These directly hurt conversions and SEO right now.

Tier 2: Fix this week. Thin descriptions, missing alt text, and inconsistent product data. These are important but won't cause immediate damage if they wait a few days.

Tier 3: Fix this month. Store structure improvements, tag cleanup, and navigation refinements. These are strategic changes that improve the store over time.

How to Run This Checklist Faster
